The city was founded in 1883 as Sanatoria by settlers from Lawrenceville, Pennsylvania. It was later renamed Auburndale by the first postmaster after the nearby town of Auburn. Today, Auburndale features a number of attractions such as The Lakeside Inn which has been in continuous operation since 1910; The Chain O'Lakes State Park with its 8-lake chain; and Lake Myrtle Sports Complex offering sports fields and more than a mile of walking trails with scenic views.
